Robert Spencer, is a deacon in the Catholic Church and a self described “expert” on Islam who purports to have “studied Islam for over 20 years.” He is a key figure and proponent of the “counter-jihad movement” a loose grouping of variously motivated ideologues who claims there is a “civilizational jihad” being perpetrated by Muslims and leftist collaborators to reshape “the West” and strip it of its traditional identity in order to replace it with Islam and socialism. This identitarian focus is where we see potential schisms in the movement with some adherents emphasizing the West’s supposed heritage as both Christian and White, whereas others within the movement focus on the former or the latter. Spencer first gained national attention during the so-called “Ground Zero” mosque controversy in 2010. Later he was again the subject of attention after Anders Brevik, a self-styled neo-Crusader sympathetic to “counter-jihad” perpetrated a terrorist attack in Norway in which 77 people were killed. Spencer’s views and opinions were cited several dozen times in Brevik’s manifesto.
Spencer founded two Islamophobic websites JihadWatch and DhimmiWatch in 2003, later redirecting DhimmiWatch to JihadWatch. Spencer’s site JihadWatch also redirected from the pages “FuckIslam.com” and “FuckAllah.com” to JihadWatch, highlighting the fact that Spencer is not a dispassionate or objective scholar on Islam but rather an ideologically motivated bigot. Prior to his controversial and hate-filled views becoming public knowledge Spencer was frequently brought on media platforms as an expert guest or scholar to discuss Islam and Muslim issues. After he was banned entry to the UK in June 2013 he has been mostly related to contributing to the main backer of JihadWatch David Horowitz’s FrontPageMag and other right-wing sites such as Breitbart, PJ Media, etc. Furthermore, he and Pamela Geller founded the Islamophobic organizations, the American Freedom Defense Initative (AFDI), and Stop the Islamization of America/Nations. They partner in rallies, conferences with far-right identitarian based movements and political parties in Europe such as Geert Wilders Freedom Party.
Spencer was banned from entering the UK in 2013 for “promoting hate.”
Author unavailable (via BBC) (June 2013) “Pamela Geller and Robert Spencer co-founded anti-Muslim group Stop Islamization of America. They were due to speak at an English Defence League march in Woolwich, where Drummer Lee Rigby was killed. A government spokesman said individuals whose presence ‘is not conducive to the public good’ could be excluded by the home secretary.”
Spencer believes that Islam is a danger to the West.
Robert Spencer (via Washington Times) (December 2003): “We wanted Catholics to become informed about Islam because not only is Islam the church’s chief rival in terms of religion but Islam is a serious threat to the peace and well-being of the Western world in general.”
Robert Spencer (via Washington Times) (December 2003): “There’s an unwillingness by Muslims to coexist as equals with other religions, and they conduct a very energetic worldwide missions campaign...Instead of Europe being Catholic as it was in the Middle Ages, in terms of demographic trends, it’s set to become Muslim Europe.
Hugh Fitzgerald (who many believe to be Robert Spencer’s alias) (via The American Muslim) (2007): “Millions of Muslim migrants, now settled in Western Europe and even, to a thankfully much lesser degree, in North America. They give no signs of abandoning their loyalty to Islam and no signs of any permanent acceptance of the principles on which the Infidel nation-states in which they have been permitted to settle are built. They give no signs, en masse, of truly integrating into a world which, of course, since every political, intellectual and moral principle of that world is flatly contradicted by Islam, of course they would not. Only a handful, who essentially abandon Islam (even if they pretend they have not, often calling themselves ‘cultural Muslims’ by which they mean little more than a fond memory of certain kinds of cooking), can be intelligently integrated into Western societies. The rest remain a permanent source of disruption, misinformation, threat, and of course potential menace. [emphasis added]”
Spencer stated that the only reason bombing Mecca might be wrong is because it would not work.
Robert Spencer (Jihad Watch) (July 2005): “It is likely that a destruction of the Ka’aba or the Al-Aqsa Mosque would have the same effect: it would become [a] source of spirit, not of dispirit. The jihadists would have yet another injury to add to their litany of grievances.”
Spencer voiced his support for Oriana Fallaci, who compared Islam to European fascism. Spencer also believes Islamo-fascism is a legitimate descriptor.
Robert Spencer (Jihad Watch) (November 2005): “Fallaci's a voice of rare courage.... When she is gone, we may hope – for all our sakes – that many others will be ready to step into the breach and speak the truth as she did, whatever the cost, as she did. As Oriana Fallaci so memorably demonstrated in her address on receiving the Annie Taylor Award, nothing less than our civilization itself is at stake."
Robert Spencer (Jihad Watch) (October 2008): “The term ‘Islamo-Fascists’ no more blames the religion of Islam than the term ‘Italian Fascism’ blames Italy for fascism. It merely refers to those Muslims—who obviously really exist—who invoke Islam to justify violence and supremacism, whether they are invoking Islamic doctrines correctly or not.”
According to Spencer, Islam is inherently violent and a threat to the West. Furthermore, to Spencer, there should be no distinction between extremists and moderates.
Robert Spencer (C-SPAN) (August 2006): “Well the problem that we face with international Jihad terrorism is deeply rooted within Islam. Although there are many officials who are hastening to assure us that the problem with terrorism has nothing to do with Islam at all, the only people that they don’t seem to be able to convince of that are the Muslims themselves, particularly the terrorists who claim to be representing and acting upon the teachings of pure Islam and true Islam.”
Robert Spencer (C-SPAN) (August 2006): “Islam is the only religion in the world that has a developed doctrine, theology and legal system that mandates violence against unbelievers and mandates that Muslims must wage war in order to establish the hegemony of the Islamic social order all over the world...And so while there are moderate Muslims, the fact that Islam is not moderate makes it very difficult for those moderates to establish any kind of large scale anti-terror effort”
Robert Spencer in a now-deleted article (via The American Muslim) (2007): “I have maintained from the beginning of this site and before that that there is no reliable way to distinguish a ‘moderate’ Muslim who rejects the jihad ideology and Islamic supremacism from a ‘radical’ Muslim who holds such ideas, even if he isn’t acting upon them at the moment. And the cluelessness and multiculturalism of Western officialdom, which make officials shy away from even asking pointed questions, only compound this problem.”
Robert Spencer (CPAC Speech “Jihad: The Political Third Rail) (February 2010): “It is absurd to think Islam is a religion of peace that has been hijacked by extremists.”
Robert Spencer (via FAIR) (March 2007): "Unfortunately, however, jihad as warfare against non-believers in order to institute ‘Sharia’ worldwide is not propaganda or ignorance, or a heretical doctrine held by a tiny minority of extremists. Instead, it is a constant element of mainstream Islamic theology."
Robert Spencer (Jihad Watch) (via Loonwatch) (2009): “And those who are talking about it are smeared and vilified as racists and bigots. When a nuclear-powered Islamic Republic of France threatens the U.S., however, some Americans may come to regret the ease with which they swallowed and even propagated defamation and lies about anti-jihad European politicians such as Geert Wilders.”
Spencer spoke out against Keith Ellison using the Qu’ran to be sworn in as a congressman.
Robert Spencer (Jihad Watch) (December 2006): “Re: Ellison - I hope there will be some who have the courage to point out that no American official should be taking an oath on the Qur’an, since—as we have been pointing out here for over three years now—there are so many elements of traditional and mainstream Islam that are at variance with our system of government, our Constitution, and our entire way of life. But since that is blandly denied and unexamined by the mainstream media and government officials, it is much more likely that Qur’anic oath-taking will be allowed without any discussion at all.”
According to Spencer, Muslims will be loyal to Islam before being loyal to their country.
Robert Spencer (Jihad Watch) (September 2008): “Islamic loyalty supersedes nationalism, and it is impossible to tell where any given believer’s loyalties actually lie.”
Spencer believes that Constantinople (Turkey, a majority Muslim country) should be reconquered.
Garibaldi user (LoonWatch) (April 2009): “Recently, Charles Johnson of Little Green Footballs, a former ally of Spencer’s and not an individual sympathetic to Islam exposed Spencer’s partnership with fascist European politicians as well as brought to light the fact that Spencer, on his personal Facebook account joined a group which seeks to reconquer present day Turkey, effectively expel and slaughter 150 Million Muslims and replace them with Christians.”
Spencer defended notorious Islamophobes Debbie Schlussel and Pamela Geller
Spencer (Jihad Watch) (via Loonwatch) (March 2010): “[Debbie] Schlussel and [Pamela] Geller are freedom fighters, warriors for human rights.”
Spencer defended a person who wanted to destroy Pakistan, a majority Muslim country.
Spencer (Jihad Watch) (via Loonwatch) (March 2010): “The girl is right: do not fear. Fight back against the jihad. Fear hands the jihadis a weapon.”
Spencer currently maintains a Twitter account, reachable at twitter.com/jihadwatchers. His tweets are primarily links to dubious news sources about the Islamic world and related news events. Spencer also links his blog commentary to these news events. As of 2018, Spencer still maintains his Islamophobic website, Jihad Watch. In 2015, Spencer came under scrutiny, because public tax records indicate that Spencer is given a yearly stipend of roughly $100k by David Horowitz.
Spencer tried to promote a conspiracy theory that the true (jihadist) culprit recent Toronto van attacks was covered up by the government.
Mack Lamoureux Vice (April 2018): “Spencer—an anti-Muslim activist with almost 100,000 Twitter followers—highlighted differences in a courtroom sketch of Minassian and a still of the alleged killer from a low-resolution video, implying the government may be covering up a jihad attack. Spencer argued one image shows Minassian with hair, while in the other he appears bald. Spencer lays down the usual “I’m just asking questions” line. These questions include ‘Was Minassian supplied a toupee in court today? And “Was he wearing a bald wig [the day of the attack?]’ ‘Or are authorities once again not being honest with us?’ he asks in his post.”
