Students for Academic Freedom: Founder (2003)
Islamofascism Awareness Week (October 2007): Main organizer
David Horowitz was born on January 10, 1939 and is a former Marxist and Editor of the Leftist Ramparts Magazine, later becoming a neo-Conservative. Horowitz is the founder and operator of the David Horowitz Freedom Center, the umbrella organization of projects such as Robert Spencer’s JihadWatch, FrontPageMag, and Caroline Glick’s Israel Security Project. Horowitz has been a premier promoter and among the foremost publicists of the Islamophobia network. He helped popularize the use of the term “Islamofascism” through his "Islamofascism Awareness Week," which brought leading Islamophobes to more than a hundred college campuses in October 2007. His website, FrontPageMag, features the Islamophobia movement's leading writers and links to other anti-Muslim sites. But more than a promoter, Horowitz is also a key participant. He appears in his own venues as well as in other right-wing arenas, such as TheWashington Times, TheWeekly Standard and Fox News. Horowitz is also the author of various articles and essays on the subject, such as Unholy Alliance: Radical Islam and the American Left and The Black Book of the America Left. Horowitz is a frequent speaker at American colleges and universities, often sparking controversy.
Horowitz continues to further the toxic and bigoted narratives about Islam and Muslims through the David Horowitz Freedom Center and its affiliated sites. In November 2018, Horowitz held his annual “Restoration Weekend,” a retreat for wealthy individuals that brought speakers such as Robert Spencer and Milo Yiannopoulos. Horowitz continues to be active on his Twitter account, in addition to speaking at various colleges and universities around the country. Horowitz visited Dartmouth College in October 2018 as a guest speaker, an event which many students protested.
Horowitz espouses the belief that Arabs are “backwards” and promoters of the destruction of Israel and the extermination of the Jewish people.
“If the Palestinian Arabs had been willing to accept this arrangement in which they received 90 percent of the land in the Palestine Mandate, and under which they benefited from the industry, enterprise and political democracy the Jews brought to the region, there would have been no Middle East conflict. But this was not to be.”
“There is a famous "green line" marking the boundary between Israel and its Arab neighbors. That green line is also the bottom line for what is the real problem in the Middle East. It is green because plants are growing in the desert on the Israeli side but not on the Arab side. The Jews got a sliver of land without oil, and created abundant wealth and life in all its rich and diverse forms. The Arabs got nine times the acreage but all they have done with it is to sit on its aridity and nurture the poverty, resentments and hatreds of its inhabitants. Out of these dark elements they have created and perfected the most vile anti-human terrorism the world has ever seen: Suicide bombing of civilians. In fact, the Palestinians are a community of suicide bombers: they want the destruction of Israel more than they want a better life.”
“If there is resistance to Islamic terror in Lebanon today, it is even more invisible than moderate Islam. Put bluntly, while the Lebanese have demonstrated their resistance to the Syrian occupier in the very recent past, there has been no evidence of it when the aggressor is an Islamic force bent on obliterating the Jews.”
“Until the arrival of Arafat and the Palestinian terrorists, Lebanon was a Christian democracy. But Islamic radicalism could not tolerate either Christianity or democracy. This — not the presence of tiny Israel (one hundred times smaller than its current antagonists) is the root cause of the violence in the Middle East. The cause is Arab intolerance and Islamic hate. One Jewish state among 22 Arab states was one too many. Six million Jews among 300 million Arabs was too much to bear. A sliver of land, less than one percent of the Arab land mass, which belonged to first to the Turks and then to the British was an imperialist outrage.”
“Lebanon, a country raped by the Syrian-Iranian axis and the Palestinians has become an integral component of the terrorists' war plan to push the Middle Eastern Jews, who have lived continuously for 3,000 years in the region, into the sea. Lebanon is a tragedy of the 58-year Arab war against Israel, against democracy, and against Christianity in the Middle East. But its government and its people are not innocent.”
“Israel is the most creative, productive society on the face of the earth. Which is another reason why the Arabs hate it. Hate Israel. Israel’s creativity and productivity because it shows how Islam as currently interpreted has blighted the Arab world.”
“It’s all about the culture. And Palestine is a culture of hate.”
“The difference between Islamic fanatics, or Jew haters, and Hitler is that Hitler hid the Final Solution, and the Iranians and Hezbollah shout it from the rooftops. And the whole Muslim world accepts it.”
Horowitz frequently targets American Muslim groups, especially at American colleges and universities.
“On campuses across this country, embedded in the leadership of every radical ‘anti-war’ protest group, are organizations that promote the culture of Islamic terrorism and its anti-Western, anti-Israeli and anti-American agendas. One that will serve as an example for the others is the radical Muslim Student Association (MSA). The Muslim Student Association is an organization financed by the Saudis and also by student funds at every university where it operates. The ideas and enthusiasms that it promotes among impressionable college students should give every American cause for concern.”
“The UCLA Muslim Student Association has routinely invited pro-terrorist speakers to the UCLA campus and paid for them with student funds.”
“The only way to counter such malicious attacks is to brand the campus allies of Hamas for what they are: supporters of genocidal lies and a terrorist war to obliterate the state of Israel and kill its Jews. These American allies of Hamas terrorism include Students for Justice in Palestine, the Muslim Students Association, Jewish Voice for Peace, and assorted leftwing groups who support them.”
“The ten case histories in this report present a disturbing picture of campus communities—among them some of the most prestigious colleges in the country—where groups parroting the violent propaganda of Hamas and other terror organizations promote a hate filled agenda aimed at the destruction of Israel and the extermination of the Jewish people. This nationally coordinated effort, which is spearheaded by Students for Justice in Palestine (SJP) and the Muslim Students Association (MSA), both of which were planted in the U.S. by members of a terrorist organization, the Muslim Brotherhood, is not only tolerated but supported and funded by administrators at these schools who rigorously restrain other hate groups through codes of conduct that in this case are ignored.”
Horowitz sees Islam as a threat and blames former President Barack Obama for crisis in the Middle East.
“The third cause of the Middle Eastern morass was Obama’s failure, early on in his Obama administration, to support the green revolution in Iran, when its brave citizens poured into the streets in 2009 to protest a rigged election and the totalitarian regime. Obama’s silence was in effect support for the Jew-hating and America-hating regime, into whose ruling group Secretary of State Kerry’s daughter soon married. Obama’s betrayal of the Iranian people was a reiteration of his signature message to the region: America no longer cares to support freedom, and is willing to support its enemies, even those who kill Americans in the name of Islam.”
“The source of the terror in Lebanon as in Iraq is to be found in the Koran and in the despotisms of the Arab Middle East.”
“In the midst of these wars with a genocidal enemy, those who clamor for cease-fires before the enemy is defeated, who call for withdrawals that would leave sovereign states in the hands of an implacable foe, who decry the civilian casualties caused by the only armies who do not target civilians, who exploit the Abu Ghraibs on our side and not theirs, whose hysterical fear of the reality we face takes the form of pathological denial which causes them to project the enemy's rabid hatred for us onto our own commander-in-chief - those blame America firsters will have a lot to answer for before this conflict is over.”
“Islam is often defended as a religion no different from Christianity, Hinduism, Judaism and most other faiths. But this overlooks the fact that unlike other modern faiths, Islam is a political religion. Islam has had no reformation since its founding in the 7th Century, and Muslims recognize no separation between religion and state. In its canonical texts and teachings, Islam regards all other religions (and non-religions) as ‘infidel’ creeds, and instructs believers to regard themselves at war with those who will not submit to the Muslim God. Unlike Christians or Jews, Muslim leaders seek to establish a global Islamic state or “caliphate” that would impose Islamic law on individuals everywhere and thus criminalize heretical thoughts.”
Horowitz believes the term “Islamophobia” is merely a propagandist ploy.
“As it happens, ‘Islamophobe’ is a term coined by the Muslim Brotherhood to demonize its opponents, and the center of a campaign seeking a universal ban on critics as religious blasphemers. The campaign’s success can be seen in President Obama’s refusal to call the terrorist Islamic State ‘Islamic,’ or to describe the war waged by the Islamic State, al Qaeda and other Islamic terror organizations as a religious crusade.”
